Attitude, Practice and Factors Associated Taking Cancer Screening Test Among Women in Rural and Urban Area

Abstract
Background: The decline in death rates of cancer was attributed to the use of screening test for early diagnosis of cancer. This study was conducted in order to identify the factors associated with the attitude and taking regular screening test of breast and stomach cancers that are the most prevalent in Korean women.

Methods: Women aged 40 or over were interviewed about cancer screening practices, individual perceptions and modifying factors in rural and urban areas.

Results: The questionnaires were answered by 305 women in urban, 299 women in rural areas. The overall rate of test for breast and stomach cancer were 34.9%, 34.4% in urban area, 19.1%, 15.8% in rural area, respectively. Experience and Regular examination of cancer screening tests of rural woman were significantly lower than the urban (P<0.05). The first motive of taking screening test was recommendation by doctors, or nurses in the case of breast cancer, while gastrointestinal symptom was the first motive in the case of stomach cancer. Statistically significant (P<0.05) predictors of taking regular screening test were as follows: (1) breast cancer: high levels of education and income, taking stomach cancer screening test (2) stomach cancer: high levels of education and income, taking breast cancer screening test, fear of getting cancer.

Conslusions: Most of women aged 40 years or over do not receive screening test on a regular basis, especially in the case of rural women. The primary reason for not having screening test was lack of the concept about the importance of disease prevention and health promotion.
